At approximately 11pm on Halloween night, a patrol officer came upon a fight in progress on Lansdowne Rd at Aldridge St in Saanich. The officer came upon a fracas in the roadway involving a group of people who fled upon police arrival.
The investigation by the Uniform Division officers located a victim, a 20-year old male resident of Victoria, who attempted to intervene in a physical fight between two females. He was then assaulted by another male who stabbed the victim with a screwdriver. The victim was transported to hospital with injuries including cuts and scratches.  He also sustained one significant puncture wound that penetrated his lung. The victim remains in hospital with a collapsed lung, and is being treated. He was listed in critical, but stable condition.
The suspect, a 24-year old male from Saanich, was arrested at the scene. The Saanich PD K9 unit was able to locate what is believed to be the weapon in the bushes nearby.
Charges being recommended to Crown Counsel include Aggravated Assault, Assault with a Weapon, Fail to Comply with Recognizance, and Fail to Comply with Probation.
Alcohol appears to have been a contributing factor.
