April 8th to 14th is Public Safety Telecommunications Professionals Week.

Every year, the second week of April is dedicated to those men and women who serve their community in Public Safety Communications Centres. This highly trained group is there to assist you when you call 9-1-1 and are an essential part of the public safety team serving the community.

In Saanich we have both a Police and a Fire Department communications centre. It is situated in a state of the art tower built to withstand natural disasters.

“These men and women are a friendly, helpful voice on the other end of the phone in your time of need. They are also our lifeline for officers out working in the community,” says Sgt. Dean Jantzen

Whether it be just answering a few questions or to report a serious incident they are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In fact, this morning just after 10am, they took a call from a woman who was in labour and thought she may be delivering her baby in the parking lot of the Cedar Hill Rec. Centre.  Saanich Police, Fire and BC Ambulance were dispatched to the scene to assist.
