On Wednesday, May 7, 2008, the Saanich Police held their 10th Annual Volunteer Appreciation Night. Over 150 volunteers attended to be recognized for their contribution to the municipality, their neighbourhood, and their block.
Six groups of volunteers were recognized that evening: Block Watch, Saanich Police Reserve Constables, Greater Victoria Police Victim Services, Criminal Justice Student Volunteers, Saanich Restorative Justice Program (the John Howard Society), and the Saanich Police Board.
Mayor Frank Leonard and Chief Constable Derek Egan (now retired) made opening remarks. Reserve Sergeant Jeremy Mannall-Fretwell spoke on behalf of the volunteers. All three acknowledged the contribution of our volunteers and thanked them for the time, dedication and invaluable service each member and group provides.
Deputy Chief Bob Downie presented the keynote address titled, “The Road Ahead: Working Together for a Safer Community”, discussing the future roles of policing and the impact that will have on volunteers. He also presented Saanich Police’s newest crime prevention initiative, Park Watch.
The evening also provided volunteers with an opportunity to meet fellow volunteers, to enjoy refreshments provided by Truffles Catering, and to visit community displays showcasing each of the six volunteer groups represented and the Saanich Emergency Preparedness program display.
A big thank you is extended to the following businesses that provided door prizes: BC Gov’t Product Distribution, Cedar Hill Golf Course, Coast Capital Insurance Services, ICBC Road Safety, Kool FM, The Lock Doctor, The Ocean, 100.3 The Q, Saanich Police, Saanich Recreation, and Serious Coffee at Millstream Village.
