    Frustrated in Saanich

I am on the computer trying to find this answer, and am not sure what government body takes care of the “rules of the road”. Along Carey Rd, at Northridge Elem. there is curb parking just before the entrance of the school. The Road is wide enough to allow a second line of cars and the the continues traffic to continue to pass by. As at every school, parking is bad. The drop of zone is supposed to be continuous, but of course, is not, and this holds up traffic from being able to flow. I am early to get a curb spot, but when I come back, there is a line of what I call “double parked” vehicles. I have been stuck in my spot for up to 10 minutes waiting to get out. Because these people are still in their cars (some even wait with engines off) they do not consider themselves double parked but merely waiting to get into the drop off zone? I am getting very frustrated, and find these lineups getting longer and longer. I get there early to get a spot, and now have to leave later because of these holdups. Does it sound like to you that these vehicles should be allowed to linger like this trapping curb parked vehicles in? Cnst. Basi is the school liaison for Northridge, but was not sure if this is something that needs to be pointed out to her? Thanks

Saanich Police Response: Hello. I apologize that this question was not answered sooner. It was overlooked in the shuffle as we familiarize ourselves with the mechanics of our new comments page.
I did some background work on the topic of traffic congestion at Northridge School. I spoke with Principal Coughlin and she is well aware of the issue that you are referring to. She advised me of the various efforts she and her staff are making to deal with the causes of this traffic congestions problem. They have called Saanich Municipal Engineering and are out monitoring the situation every day. They even give out informal warning tickets if need be. At the end of the day there are just too many cars converging on one area all at the same time. (I realize this is little consolation to you when you are trapped in your parking spot each morning.) We know that traffic congestions causes frustration, which can lead to bad driving decisions. This has serious implications anywhere, especially in a school zone. I invite you to speak to Principal Coughlin yourself if you have any ideas or solutions to offer. I will also pass your e-mail along to our Municipal Engineers (feel free to call them as well at 475-1775). Principal Coughlin is already in touch with the municipality about this issue as they are the best ones to sort out long term solutions to traffic flow issues. As well, I have passed your comment on to our Traffic Safety Unit and to Cst. Basi - so they are also aware of your concerns. Thank you for writing in.

    Diane of Saanich

Today at 10:45 am I drove through the intersection of Emily Carr and Chatteron Way. I saw several young people with work vests on, police officers and media people. What was going on there? Can you tell me and the other motorists about the activity there? Nice web site. I like the idea of asking on line.

Saanich Police Response:Hi Diane,Thanks for visiting our site. What you saw today was the launch of the Saanich Police Anti Graffiti Program T.A.G which stands for Together Against Graffiti. The Saanich Police have partnered with students from Claremount Sr. Secondary School to work together to educate the public about graffiti and to remove graffiti from our community. It is our hope that this program will expand include students from other Saanich schools.

Nice feature for a police web site> why do you suppose other departments do not have this feature. I viewed your archives and I was pleasantly surprised to see how open and honest many of your replies were. I noticed too that there are really only two officers writing responses, Jane and John. Do you have other officers or is it just the two officers. Now that you have a new version of your comments page what guarantee can you offer to your visitors that you will maintain the same openness and honesty. Good luck with it

Saanich Police Response: We are glad you like our guestbook Tim. John Price, our public information officer, and I are the two officers who respond to the comments because managing the website is one of our duties. However, when we get a question which pertains to a specific aspect of policing we often request input from the officers who are currently working in that specific section or are the subject matter specialists (i.e. traffic or crime prevention). Even though we have had to upgrade our security features we have no intention of changing our philosophy or approach to the guestbook. The best way to prove that is by inviting you to continue to visit our site and see for yourself. Thank you for the encouragement.
