The Saanich Police support a variety of Crime Prevention Programs. These programs are generally instituted at the national level but are implemented and facilitated by our own members. You may access some of these programs by clicking on the links to the left of your screen. If you require further information, please call the Crime Prevention Office at 250-475-4704 or visit the Community Safety Office at Uptown Mall (opening 2021, Covid dependent).

BIKE SAFETY TIPS:

TO REPORT A STOLEN BIKE FROM SAANICH:

  • Call the Saanich Police non-emergency line at 250-475-4321.

TIPS AFTER YOU PURCHASE A BICYCLE:

  • Take photographs of your bicycle, including different angles, and capture items that are unique and identifiable, such as decals, paint, upgrades or add-ons.
  • Record your serial number (it may be on your receipt if purchased from a bike shop). This is the most concrete way to identify ownership of a bicycle and the easiest way to identify the owner.
  • Look into insuring your bike under your home/tenant insurance policy.
  • Register your bike online for free with Project 529 here. If you'd like to register in person, registration stations can be searched here

HOW TO PROTECT YOUR BIKE FROM THEFT:

  • Lock up your bike, even if you are just stopping for a few minutes.
  • Use a high-quality U-lock rather than a cable lock.
  • Make sure the wheel and frame are locked up.
  • Look for something metal and large to lock it to.
  • Lock it to the middle of the bike rack instead of the end, so it is less visible to thieves.
  • Bring your bike inside at night.
  • When you are out, lock it in a well-lit place where there is plenty of foot traffic.
  • Swap quick-release seat and wheel skewers for ones that require keys.
