Since January 1st, 2011, the Saanich Police have seen a serious and sustained spike in theft from autos.
In January 2011 there was 122 reported autos entered. By comparison, January 2010 there were 77. That is an increase of roughly 60% over last year.
Areas that have received the greatest number of complaints include:
– Tillicum road and Burnside road, including the Tillicum mall
– Cook street and Maplewood road area
– McKenzie ave and Quadra street, including Saanich Centre
– Shelbourne street and Elnido road area
Items taken include wallets, purses, identification, small electronic devices, tools, computers, cell phones, clothing and others.
Currently involved in this investigation are Patrol and Bike Squad officers, Forensic Investigators and the Street Crime Unit. All investigative avenues, including the use of Bait Cars, are being explored.
