Some recent successes by the Saanich Police on theft from auto investigations have had a direct impact on the number of reported thefts. Where we were receiving 8-10 per day we are now receiving only 2-3 per day.
On January 30th, a witness contacted Saanich Police about two youths acting suspiciously in the area of the 600 block of Kent road. The two youths were found in the area by Patrol officers and were identified. Although, both were suspicious, there was insufficient evidence to arrest them for any offence.
One of those youths identified was found to have committed a recent break and enter. The 15 year old male Saanich resident, who was already being supervised by the courts, was arrested later the same day and held to appear before a judge.
On January 31st, a stolen car was reported from UVIC. On February 2nd, the vehicle was seen at the Langford Walmart by a person who witnessed the driver committing a theft from auto in the parking lot. It fled and was located at the Trans Canada and Tillicum where it was followed to the 200 block of Cadillac avenue. The driver was arrested without incident.
The 39 year old male of no fixed address, was arrested and held in custody to appear in court. He has a lengthy history of theft related offences including theft from autos.
The public is reminded to lock your vehicle and leave nothing of value. Even items such as clothing can be attractive to a thief.
