There has been an alarming increase of deer strikes this week in Saanich and a mysterious cat shooting and three dead geese in the area of Walton drive.
Three dead Canada geese were found by Saanich Pound Inspectors in the 300 block of Walton place on the roadway. Unfortunately, they had already been scavenged by other animals or birds and possibly struck by a vehicle. As a result, it is impossible to tell a cause of death.
Also in the 300 block of Walton place a cat was found to be deceased. The cat had a very obvious through and through type wound, likely from a high calibre pellet gun or rifle.
No formal connection has been drawn between these two incidents, however, given the proximity, there is concern that these incidents may be linked. The investigation into these two incidents by the Saanich Pound continues.
There has also been an alarming increase in deer vs. vehicle strikes in Saanich this week. A total of 11 deer have been either destroyed or removed after being found deceased, by Saanich Pound Inspectors. Six of the deer were only fawns.
The public is reminded to exercise caution while driving especially when an animal is spotted at the roadside. Often other animals are present in the immediate area that may not be obvious to drivers.
If anybody has any information about the incidents on Walton place, they are encouraged to contact the Saanich Police at 250-475-4321.
