The busiest travel weekend of the year is fast approaching.
The Labour Day travel weekend is often the busiest of the summer season. It not only marks the end of the summer but also is a reminder that students will be back to school next week.
For those travelling out of town for the weekend, plan accordingly. Increased volumes on local highways and at the ferries can be expected.
Over the Labour Day weekend we will see:
- Approximately 1725 crashes in B.C., 515 injuries and 5 fatalities (ICBC)
- About 40 crashes per day in the CRD (ICBC)
Last year in Saanich there were 19 crashes over the long weekend and 63 violation tickets issues.
Some of the contributing factors include driver inattention, driver error, driver confusion, alcohol consumption and unsafe speed. Crashes at intersections account for 40% of the collisions.
Saanich Police Patrol and Traffic Safety Unit officers will be out over the long weekend looking for violations. The focus will be on unsafe driving, seat belt use, cell phone use, and drivers who have consumed alcohol.
Help us obtain our goal of nobody injured from crashes and no violation tickets issued over the weekend.
