Early Monday morning a theft from auto suspect was arrested by a patrol supervisor.
At approximately, 3:30am Monday morning, given a high number of theft from autos occurring in the area, an on-duty patrol sergeant was roaming the streets looking for suspects.
A cyclist wearing all dark clothing was seen in the area of Foul Bay rd and Forrester st. When the patrol sergeant tried to stop the cyclist with emergency lights, the cyclist continued riding, pretending not to notice the officer.
While pedalling away, the rider was seen to throw something into some bushes from a distance.
When contacted by the officer, the cyclist appeared nervous. He stated that he had been visiting a friend in the area and that they had been working on a bike.
When searched, a number of tools were recovered including bolt cutters, a screwdriver, and a folding knife with tools. He also had an emergency services folding knife which had a window smashing tool at one end. All of these items were apparently for ‘bike maintenance’.
Found in the area where he was seen to throw something was an expensive mountain bike valued at about $2000 dollars. Also found when searched was identification in the name of a victim who had his wallet stolen in the days prior.
The male suspect, Matthew Patrick SAVAGE, a 37 year old Saanich resident, was arrested for Possession of Stolen Property and Possession of Break-in Instruments. When he was identified properly, he was also found to have three outstanding warrants from the Victoria Police for similar offences.
SAVAGE was tele-bailed before a Justice of the Peace and released with strict conditions including a curfew and not to possess any tools.
