Theft of cancer funds

On Oct. 26th, 2011, Saanich Police received a complaint about the theft of donated funds from a breast cancer fundraiser.

October is breast cancer awareness month and Safeway is a major sponsor of the fundraising drive. On Oct. 22nd, 2011, the employees of the Safeway at Tillicum Mall held a one day campaign to raise funds for this worthy cause.

Volunteers were solicited by way of an online application process through the Breast Cancer Foundation web page. It is felt that the suspect applied online to be a volunteer canvasser for the event with a fictitious name and address.

Upon arriving at the store, the thief presented herself as an employee of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, which was untrue.

At the conclusion of the event, the suspect proceeded to count the money, along with another volunteer. She then stated that she was ‘…going to my car and get some gifts…’ for the other volunteers. She never returned.

As luck would have it, one of the employees snapped a picture of the thief on her camera, which was provided to the Saanich Police investigator. This is the image that is being released today.

The total loss of the donated funds was in the hundreds of dollars.

On the day of this incident, the suspect was described as 35-45 years, heavy set, dyed pink hair, glasses, and wearing a pink ‘Hollister’ shirt. At the time she provided a first name of ‘Haley,’ believed to be false. She went so far as to tell people that she was a breast cancer survivor, something that cannot be confirmed.

The Saanich Police investigator has had a difficult time identifying and locating the suspect in this matter. If you recognize her or have any information you are encouraged to contact the Saanich Police at 250-475-4321.

Donations to this worthy cause can be made at CBCF.org.
