Yesterday morning just after 7am, a resident on Glasgow street went to his car to find a suspicious package located underneath. He contacted the Saanich Police who arrived to secure the area. The road was closed and residents were advised to stay indoors.Â
The RCMP Explosive Ordinance team was deployed from Vancouver to assist. They arrived on scene in the early afternoon.
After an assessment, it was determined that the safest course of action was to destroy the package. It was then struck with a water canon and rendered safe. The remnants of the device were seized by investigators to analyze for any forensic evidence.
The device was made to look real with a wick. It is described by technicians as a home-made pyrotechnic and not an explosive.
The area was reopened at about 2pm yesterday after having been a nuisance to those in the neighbourhood.
The investigation into who made it and placed it where it was found continues. If you know anything about this incident you are encouraged to contact the Saanich Police at 250-475-4321.
