Saanich Police investigate chemical seizure

Patrol officers seize a large quantity of chemicals from a vehicle at Shelbourne Plaza.

At about 3:15pm, Wednesday afternoon, two officers were at the Shelbourne Plaza when they spotted a male sleeping in a vehicle. Feet protruding from the drivers window, is what drew the officers attention. When they approached to speak to the driver, he was difficult to wake up. When arrested the driver was found to be in possession of a small amount of controlled substances.

While searching the black Nissan Rogue, a pungent odour was detected by officers. Several containers of various chemicals, some labelled and some not, were recovered. Other items recovered included identification in various names, multiple cell phones, plastic bags, and a large amount of cash in the thousands of dollars.

Given the unknown nature of the chemicals, the assistance of the RCMP Provincial Clandestine Lab team was requested. Their expertise in safely processing and disposing of dangerous chemicals was necessary. With their assistance, the chemicals were sampled for testing and then disposed of safely.

The driver was found to be in breach of two different probation orders. Suggested charges include:

• Possession of a controlled substance

• Possession for the purpose of trafficking

• Production of a controlled substance

• Possession of stolen property

• Breach related charges

The driver, a 31 year old Saanich resident, was released with documents to appear in court.
