Two motor vehicle collisions in Saanich late Friday night and early Saturday morning involved drinking drivers who are facing a number of related charges.
At 11 p.m. Friday, a southbound Toyota Corolla was travelling on the Trans Canada Highway parallel to Portage Inlet. The driver of the Corolla crashed into the back of a large Canadian Forces truck which had broken down on the shoulder with a flat tire.
There were no injuries to the two CF military personnel, who were standing nearby at the side of the road. They had parked their truck as far as possible off the travelled portion of the roadway with its hazard lights flashing. They had also placed several brightly-coloured hazard markers on the roadway.
The 67 year old West Shore man driving the Corolla was not hurt. He was brought to the Saanich police station where he provided breath samples over twice the legal limit. He is being criminally charged with impaired driving and driving over .08
At 1:30 Saturday morning, there was a significant single vehicle crash just north of Mount Doug Park. A neighbour heard the noise of the crash and called police. The driver had fled on foot but was located by police in the 4600 block of Cordova Bay Road. This driver, a 19 year old Saanich man, had also been drinking. He was not hurt.
He received a 24 hour driving prohibition and three charges under the Motor Vehicle Act – for Failing to Remain at the scene, Driving without Due Care and Attention and Driving Contrary to Restrictions.
It was very fortunate that no serious injuries resulted from either of these two crashes.
