Last Saturday evening, Saanich Police officers were out conducting a road check in support of the Counterattack program on Quadra street in the 3300 block. At about 10:15pm, a white 2005 Chevrolet Cavalier was seen to abruptly turn off in an attempt to evade the roadblock. A Traffic Safety Unit officer jumped in his vehicle and located the driver trying to hide in an underground parking lot nearby.
Upon speaking to the driver, he was found to have consumed alcohol. A roadside breath demand was read and a sample was taken, with the result being a ‘fail’. With regard to the new Immediate Roadside Prohibition policy, a second sample was taken with a different instrument, also a ‘fail’.
When the driver, a 29 year old Langford resident, was checked against police records, he was found to be prohibited. This driver had amassed a total of 11 separate driving prohibitions since July 2007. All of his licenses have long since been canceled and yet he was to have an ignition interlock device in his vehicle and to have completed a mandatory rehab program.
The driver received another 90 day Immediate Roadside Prohibition under the provisions of the Motor Vehicle Act. Charges of driving while prohibited under the Criminal Code and breach of an order are being suggested.
The driver was also served a suspension notice from the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles until June 13th, 2015.
Results like this are the reason officers stand out in the evenings and conduct these road checks.
