A disturbing unprovoked assault

On July 25th, at approximately 10:40pm, Saanich Police were called by 911 to Hampton Park. Upon arriving officers encountered a male on the ground bleeding profusely from the head being cared for by a friend who was using a shirt to try and staunch the bleeding.

Patrol officers and a canine team arrived at the park to begin a search for the suspects. Unfortunately, none were located.

As it turns out the two victims, local area residents, had been drinking at home and decided to walk through the park towards the Tillicum mall. While walking through the park, they passed a group of four males that were walking the other way. The group of four young males then turned and began to follow the two victims.

The four suspects then began swearing at the victims and made demands for money. All of a sudden, one of the males walked up behind the 52 year old victim who was then struck on the side of the head with what is believed to be a bat. The male suspects then fled through the park.

Given the darkness in the park at the time no description of the suspects was obtained.

The victim was left with a 3 inch gash on his head. He was taken to Victoria General Hospital by BC Ambulance Service. The injuries required multiple staples to his head and sustained significant concussion like injuries.

Investigators are at a loss and are requesting the public’s assistance in this investigation. Unfortunately there is little to go on and request that if you know something or have heard someone bragging about this incident or talking about it on social media, please contact the Saanich Police at 250-475-4321.
