Just before 7pm on Thursday evening, Sept. 6th, a hiker who had been walking in Mt. Doug park reported her vehicle had been entered.
The 24 year old Saanich woman’s vehicle was parked at about 6:30pm at the base of the Mt. Doug. The owner then returned to find the driver’s window had been smashed at 7:45pm. Unfortunately her purse had been stolen including her wallet, ID, $85 and a set of keys.
The theft was reported to the Saanich Police and officers attended the scene to investigate. The victim then departed the park to go home. She then re-contacted the Saanich Police once again at about 8:20pm to report that her home had been broken into in the 1400 block of Derby road in the Cedar Hill area.
Upon arriving home, there were no signs of forced entry, so it is believed that the keys in the purse were used. The items taken from the residence included a laptop computer, a canon camera and vehicle keys.
Investigators believe this is a situation where the culprits obtained the registered owner’s address from the identification that had been stolen once the keys were located.
This is an excellent reminder that thieves are at work on occasion in some of our parks and trails. Please do not leave any valuables in your vehicle- leave them at home or take them with you in a backpack.
