It was lucky that serious injuries were avoided in a Saturday night (Feb 23rd) two vehicle crash on Blanshard Street in Saanich.
The collision happened just before 10 p.m. A 63 year old Victoria man was driving his 1988 Chev minivan east on Saanich Road towards Tattersall Drive. He turned right at the Blanshard Street lights and began to drive the wrong way – southbound against the northbound one-way lanes of Blanshard Street.
An oncoming 2004 Chrysler Sebring was driven by a 36 year old Sooke woman. The collision was nearly head-on, but fortunately the Sebring’s driver was driving defensivily and she was able to veer away, minimizing the impact. She sustained only minor injuries.
The driver of the minivan was under the influence of alcohol. He provided a roadside breath alcohol sample which he failed. The man was then taken to hospital complaining of back pain. Following his treatment at the hospital, the man received the following:
– IRP (Immediate Roadside Prohibition) of 90 (ninety) days
– Vehicle Impoundment of 30 (thirty) days
– Charged Motor Vehicle Act: Drive Without Due Care & Attention – $368 fine
