Injuries caused by a motorcycle accident claimed the life of a 26 year old Saanich man on Saturday night, May 4, in the 3200 block of Shelbourne Street.
The motorcycle was heading northbound on Shelbourne Street when it left the roadway and struck a tree, causing critical injuries to the driver. There were no passengers on the motorcycle at the time of the collision.
There were numerous witnesses to the accident and it appeared that speed may have been a factor in this incident. Alcohol was not believed to be a factor.
One of the witnesses recognized the seriousness of the injuries to the driver of the motorcycle and immediately assessed the extent of the injuries, which led the witness to begin performing Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on the driver.
The driver was transported to hospital by the Provincial Ambulance Service  where an emergency room doctor later pronounced the male as deceased.
All lanes of travel on Shelbourne Street were closed for several hours following this incident. Members of the Saanich Police Collision Reconstructionist Team attended the scene to conduct an investigation into the probable cause of the incident.
The BC Coroners Service was notified of the incident. The identity of the deceased male has not yet been released.
“It would appear that the male was on his way home following work. The driver was within about ten (10) blocks from his home at the time of the incident” Sgt. Steve Eassie said. The cause of the crash is still unknown. “This is a tragic incident that will no doubt be life changing for those that knew the driver”
The month of May has been declared Motorcycle Awareness Month in British Columbia. All road users are reminded that the better weather will likely increase the number of motorcyclists using the road. All drivers are asked to be vigilant and watch for motorcyclists.
