A 39 year old Saanich man was arrested on Sunday afternoon, June 23, following a serious collision that left another 54 year old driver pinned inside a vehicle.
Shortly after 1 PM, numerous calls were received concerning a motor vehicle collision that had occurred in the 3100 block of Tillicum Road. Witnesses reported that the driver of a white coloured Range Rover had been making attempts to overtake other vehicles by driving over the center median. Upon entering back into the roadway, the Range Rover struck a Ford Ranger pickup from behind, causing the truck to spin. The Ford ranger was then struck a second time by the Range Rover, with the second impact striking the drivers side door of the truck.
The driver and lone occupant of the Range Rover exited his vehicle and appeared to check on the status of the driver of the other involved vehicle, who was also sole occupant of that vehicle.
Ambulance personnel and members of the Saanich Fire Department arrived on scene a short time later to render assistance. The driver of the truck was pinned in the vehicle. Fire crews used the jaws of life to extract the pinned driver. The injuries to the driver were relatively minor and were described as whiplash. The driver, a 54 year old Saanich resident, declined transport to the hospital.
Although the suspect driver initially remained on the scene, the driver began to walk away from the scene just prior to police arriving. The suspect driver was observed by area residents who aided police and prevented the suspect driver from fleeing the scene, after the driver was observed to jump a nearby fence into a private yard.
The suspect driver was located and identified. The driver was determined to be driving while prohibited and he was subsequently arrested without incident.
The driver was later released on documents with a court date in July. It is anticipated that charges including Dangerous Driving and Driving While Prohibited will be approved.
