A witness reported the sighting of a possible cougar in the Rithet’s Bog nature sanctuary in Saanich.
At approximately 9:30 am Tuesday morning, the witness observed the animal near the area of the popular walking trails.
While there was no further evidence of the animal (no tracks or other indicators found), the public are being warned of the possibility that a cougar could be in that area and are being asked to use caution.
Information on cougar safety can be found at:

Some suggestions include walking in groups of two or more people, making enough noise to prevent surprising a cougar, and carrying a sturdy walking stick that could be used to fend off an attack if necessary. Lastly, in areas where cougars may be present, it is suggested to keep children close at hand.
The BC Conservation Service has been notified of the possible sighting, as has Saanich Parks.
