A collision between a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle at the intersection of Mckenzie Avenue and Burnside Road West has resulted in the driver of the motorycle being admitted to hospital with serious life-threatening injuries. At the time of this release, the drivers condition was still noted to be critical.
Shortly after 11:30 am, Saanich Police received numerous reports of a collision involving a car and a motocycle. The driver of the motorcycle was noted to have sustained serious injuries as a result of the collision.
Initial investigation revealed that the driver of the motorcycle was proceeding westbound on Mckenzie Avenue, towards Highway #1. The driver of the car had been attempting to initiate a left hand turn from Mckenzie Avenue eastbound, to proceed northbound on Burnside Road West.
As the 87 year old driver of the car, a Saanich resident, was turning across the intersection, his vehicle, a 2008 Toyota Yaris, was struck on the rear passenger side by the motorcycle. The Toyota spun and came to rest in the intersection. The driver was shaken but not injured.
The 71 year old driver of the motorcycle, a Nanaimo resident, was thrown from his motorcycle, a 1995 Harley Davidson, onto the roadway a short distance away.
The driver of the Toyota has been issued a violation ticket for Failing to Yield on a Left Turn.
Members of the Collision Reconstructionist Team attended the scene to investigate the collision. Mckenzie Avenue was closed to westbound traffic for approximatelty 4 hours as a result of this incident.
