A collision between a cyclist and a vehicle on the Pat Bay Highway at Vanalman caused considerbale traffic congestion for the morning commute.
Just after 6:30 a.m., a female 24 year old cyclist was struck by a 2002 Subaru in the southbound lanes, resulting in both southbound lanes being closed to allow for the investigation.
It would appear that the 24 year old cyclist was attempting to cross over the two southbound lanes to access the grass median. The male 24 year old driver of the Subaru did not see the cyclist until his vehicle struck the cyclist.
The cyclist was initially believed to be in critical condition and was transported to hospital by the Provincial Ambulance Service. Thankfully, the cyclist suffered only minor injuries, including soft tissue bruising and some minor scrapes. The cyclist has been released from hospital and is resting at home.
The 24 year old driver of the Subaru was shaken as a result of this incident and remained on scene to assist with the investigation. The driver of the vehicle was not injured.
Members of the Saanich Police Traffic Safety Unit and the Collision Reconstruction Team worked quickly to re-open the roadway. The roadway was closed from the time of the collision and re-opened at around 9:30 am, three hours after the incident.
