Saanich Police are reminding residents to secure the windows and doors of their homes following three reports of break and enters to homes during afternoon hours.
The first incident was reported on Friday, November 7. At approximately 3:30 p.m., a 29 year old female had been taking a nap inside of a basement suite at a residence in the 5600 block of the Pat Bay Highway. The female awoke to the sound of someone within the basement suite. As she exited her bedroom, an unknown male fled from the suite. No description of the male could be provided.
Investigation revealed that the unknown suspect had entered into the home through an unlocked basement window, and was likely not aware that the female was home at the time of the break in. A VICPD K9 unit assisted Saanich Police with the investigation, and it appeared that the unknown suspect may have fled the area in a vehicle. Nothing was taken from the suite during this incident.
A second incident, reported Tuesday, November 12, was believed to have occurred between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. at a residence in the 4600 block of West Saanich Road. Entry to the residence was believed to have been gained through an unlocked door. The unknown suspect fled with a quantity of loose change, as well as a number of video games.
The third incident , also reported Tuesday, November 12, was believed to have occurred between 2:00 and 3:30 p.m. at a residence in the 4500 block of Chatterton Way. Entry to the residence was believed to have been gained through an unlocked door. The unknown suspect fled with a gaming console and a garment bag.
While it is not known if these incidents are related, there are striking similarities in each of the cases, the main being that entry was gained to the homes throough unlocked doors or windows.
“Area residents are being asked to be on high alert to anyone that may be in the neighbourhood that appear to be out of place” Sgt. Steve Eassie said. “If you see someone on your property, or a neighbouring property, and do not know who that person is, we would ask for you to keep a watchful eye on that person. If their actions appear suspicious, we would ask that you contact police so that the person can be identified, and that their reason for being on a property can be determined”.
There are no known suspects to these incidents at this time.
