In the early morning hours of Monday, February 3, 2014, two 18 year old suspects were arrested in the 600 block of Broadway Street and linked to several thefts from vehicles that had been reported in the immediate area.
Just before 2 a.m., Saanich Police received several calls from occupants of a residential housing complex, reporting two males that appeared to be unlawfully entering parked vehicles. Three separate complainants reported the males to be entering vehicles that were known to belong to other tenants of the complex.
Police arrived on scene a short time later and confirmed that there had in fact been a theft from a parked vehicle after contacting one of the registered owners.
Assistance was requested from a VICPD K9 unit after the area was contained by other responding police officers. The K9 officer and partner were able to establish a track near where the males had been last seen by witnesses. After less than four minutes, two suspects were located, still on the complex grounds, hiding in a garden area.
The two 18 year old males, both residents of Saanich, were taken into custody. Investigators found both suspects to be in possession of what appeared to be stolen property, including small electronic devices that were believed to have been taken from vehicles in the immediate area.
It was determined that one of the suspects had previously been released on conditions relating to two prior theft related allegations, and that one of the conditions was to have no contact with his co-accused.
Charges of Theft Under $5000, Possession of Stolen Property, and Breach of an Undertaking are expected. Both accused were held in custody to appear in court.
