This Sunday, April 13th, eight (8) Vancouver Island High School Boys Rugby Teams will be battling for a spot in this year’s Provincial Championship. This event will be well attended and supported by the Saanich Police Association and the Saanich Police Athletic Association. The teams will also be competing for the prestigious “Radu Cup” which is awarded annually to the first place winning team. Spectrum and host school St. Michaels University (SMU) will be representing Saanich against power house schools Oak Bay, Glenlyon Norfolk (GNS), Brentwood College, and others.
Rugby is an exciting sport and it will make its Olympic debut in Rio 2016.
The games are only 20 minutes in duration and will be played in a round robin format to decide who will play in the final game scheduled for 4:20pm. The weather is supposed to be spectacular and this should be a fun event to come and watch. The event itself is free. It will showcase some of Vancouver Island’s best up and coming Rugby players. Additionally, 3 girls teams will be making their first appearance at this showcase in an exhibition series. There are awards being presented on completion by Chief Downie, and of course our very own Cst. Roy Radu will be awarding the coveted Radu Cup.
Retired S/Sgt. Doug Oakley will be have his vintage 1962 Chev PC in attendance for viewing, and “Ace” will be there to meet the kids throughout the day.
We hope to see lots of familiar faces. Please see today’s Times Colonist for further information. “SMUS, Oak Bay renew rugby battle.”
