The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) and the Saanich Police Department continue with their investigation into the deaths of two individuals from yesterday afternoon. The home in the 1800 block of Newton Street remains behind police tape, while the area of interest at Cattle Point has been released.
The identity of both the male and female have now been confirmed. It has been confirmed that the male and female were in fact husband and wife, and appear to have been living together at the residence on Newton Street prior to this tragic incident.
The identities of the deceased will not be released at this time as officers are still attempting to locate any next of kin for the couple. Anyone who may have information on any known family are asked to contact the Saanich Police Department.
Yesterday afternoon, police responded to the residence to check the welfare of its occupants. Once at the property a door to the residence was forced open by police. Police entered the home and located a deceased female inside the residence. No other people were located within the home.
Police began to search for a male who was known to be associated to the residence and obtained a license plate number and vehicle description for a vehicle registered to the home. The information was shared throughout the Greater Victoria area with other police agencies, asking for them to be on the lookout for the vehicle.
Approximately one hour later, the vehicle was located, unoccupied, by a member of the Oak Bay Police Department in a parking area near Cattle Point. Officers from Oak Bay began to search the area on foot.
Shortly thereafter, several civilian witnesses observed what they believed to be a body in the water off of Cattle Point, a short distance from the shoreline. As the witnesses were about to contact police by phone, one of the Oak Bay officers on foot in the area located the group and observed the male in the water. The male appeared to be deceased.
The manner in which both of these individuals came to be deceased is still under investigation.
