Saanich Police Uniform Division members were alerted to a potentially dangerous situation by an alert witness in the late evening hours of Saturday, May 3rd.
At about 20 minutes before midnight, a male had been seen walking in the area of Blanshard Street near Vernon Avenue. The male was obseved to be carrying what was described as a very large knife that was tucked into the waistband of his pants. He was further observed to be carrying a small hatchet which was in a rear pants pocket.
Numerous officers attened to the area and the male was quickly located on Ravine Way, between Blanshard Street and Carey Road.
The male was arrested without incident, and was found to be in possession of a large bladed knife and a black hatchet that was tucked into his rear waistband.
The original witness had reported that this male appeared to be alone, angry, and walking with a purpose. Investigation revealed that the suspect may have been involved in a previous altercation in the area shortly before he was arrested, and before he was in possession of the weapons. Investigation revealed that the suspect was possibly returning to the area to confront the people that he had previously had a physical dispute with.
The male, a 39 year old resident of Saanich, was arrested and later released to appear in court at a later date. The suggested charges forwarded to Crown for consideration of charges are Assault With A Weapon, Possession Of A Weapon For A Dangerous Purpose, and Possession Of A Concealed Weapon.
The suspect is expected to appear in court in the middle of June to answer to any approved charges.
