An increase in the number of thefts of motor scooters is prompting a warning from Saanich Police for owners to take extra theft prevention to avoid becoming a victim of a theft.
Since August 1, there have been a total of five thefts of motor scooters throughout the Saanich Municipality. Three of the five scooters stolen have since been recovered, however there are still two that remain outstanding.
“We are aware that there have been thefts involving scooters in other jurisdictions as well in recent weeks” Sgt. Steve Eassie said. “We recovered one scooter that had been reported missing from another jurisdiction in the Greater Victoria area”.
It is not known why scooters have become more recent targets of thefts, however, a suggestion to lock or secure a parked scooter is being issued by Saanich Police.
“There are numerous products available that can act as a deterrent to someone who is looking to take a scooter” Sgt. Steve Eassie said. “The simple act of using a cable lock of some description, or locking the scooter to a secure object, may prevent the suspect from attempting to take your scooter, and move on to an easier target”.
Two such products are the Griplock locking mechanism and the Lock Alarm, both of which are designed for use with motor scooters.
A description of the missing scooters are: 1) a 2005 Yahama, 49cc, blue in colour, stolen from the 4000 block of Grange Road; and 2) a 2002 Honda Jazz, 49cc, red in colour, stolen from the 800 block of Vernon Avenue.
