On Thursday, November 27, Saanich Police in partnership with ICBC will launch the 2014 Saanich Pedestrian Awareness Campaign.
Officers from the Saanich Police Traffic Safety Unit, the Mountain Bike Squad, and the Reserve Program will be on hand to assist ICBC volunteers with spreading the safety messaging and handing out free reflectors.
The focus of the campaign is to educate pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers on how to avoid pedestrian and cyclist involved crashes, specifically in the fall and winter months (or whenever visibility is reduced). Many people that commute using the transit system do not consider themselves as pedestrians, even though many have to walk to and from bus stops. Often, people don’t even consider the colours of the clothing that they are wearing. The use of at least one reflector could potentially save someone from being struck.
