Saanich Police are warning businesses in the Greater Victoria area to be on the lookout for counterfeit currency. Businesses may have already fallen victim to counterfeit American currency, specifically $50 and $100 denominations.
Investigators arrested two males late this afternoon who were directly involved in the passing of counterfeit bills. Both males, one aged 16, and the other aged 20, are residents of the Lower Mainland. A third male was able to evade capture and has not yet been identified.
Investigators have advised that the suspects appear to have been targeting larger retail outlets. Purchases were made using the counterfeit currency, and following that, the items were returned for a refund.
“It is not known how many stores may have been affected, however, investigators believe that they may have intervened early in the crime spree” Sgt. Steve Eassie said.
The information is being shared in the hopes of preventing further incidents.
The investigation is still in the early stages.
Store employees and businesses that may have fallen victim to this crime are encouraged to contact Saanich Police at 250-475-4321to report the incidents.
