Saanich Police are sending out a notification to residents of apartment buildings and ground floor residences relating to two recent break, enter, and thefts that have been reported within this past week.
The first incident occurred in the 3800 block of Shelbourne Street and was reported on Thursday, November 26th , at around 9:00 p.m.. An unidentified male suspect knocked repeatedly on a ground level sliding glass door. When a 20 year old female answered the door, the male fled. The female reported that about one week prior to this incident, an unknown person had entered the unlocked sliding door while nobody was home at the apartment and a camera had been taken.
A second incident occurred in the 3600 block of Richmond Road and was reported on Tuesday, December 1st , also at around 9:00 p.m.. An unidentified male suspect opened an unlocked sliding glass door to an apartment. The lone female occupant, a 20 year old female, was present during this event and was unhurt. The unknown male entered the apartment and took a wallet that was visible on a nearby table.
“We cannot say for certain that this is the same suspect involved in these circumstances however there are some similarities between the events” Sgt. Steve Eassie said. “In both circumstances, the incidents occurred at ground floor apartments with sliding glass doors that were unlocked, the victims were both female and in their early 20’s, and the reported times are very close to one another”.
A check of the walking distance between the two locations revealed that they are roughly 7 minutes apart.
The suspect in the first incident was described as a Caucasian male, 40 t0 50 years old, short in height, a large nose, no facial hair, and wearing a blue jacket. There was no description of the suspect for the second incident.
“The intention of this release is to serve as a reminder for those people living in ground floor apartments of residences in the area, to ensure that windows and
doors are kept closed and secured, even when home in the evening hours. Windows should have window coverings both for privacy, as well as to conceal any valuables within the home. Lastly, reporting this type of incident immediately can greatly improve the possibility of identifying persons of interest.”
Anyone that may have further information about these incidents are asked to contact the Saanich Police Department at 250-475-4321 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
