In the summer of 2013 Saanich Police Financial Crimes started an investigation into a case of elder abuse. The accused, 63 year old Laurie Reynolds of Saanich, had stolen a significant amount of money from her elderly mother between 2009 and 2013.
Saanich Police Financial Crimes Detectives worked with the Victim, and the rest of her family, over the course of several months. Saanich Police executed a production order (warrant) on a bank account and were able to prove that Laurie had stolen over $300,000 from her mother. At the end of 2013 charges were forwarded to the Criminal Justice Branch for approval and accepted.
Due to the complex nature of the investigation this matter was before the courts for some time. In March 2016 Laurie Reynolds was sentenced to 30 months in jail for her crimes.
“Having your life savings pillaged by someone you trusted is the ultimate betrayal” said A/Sgt. Jereme Leslie. “Our Investigators are happy the courts have provided a clear message that vulnerable people in the community are not to be abused by anyone let alone family members who they love and trust.”
