On Wednesday October 18, 2017 just after 11:30AM Saanich Police responded to a crash near the intersection of Gorge Rd West/Donald St. A Chevrolet Suburban was travelling east on Gorge Rd W when it went off the road, mounted the sidewalk and stuck a pedestrian. On the evening of October 21, 2017 the pedestrian who was stuck, Khushal Rana, passed away while in the Intensive Care Unit at the Victoria General Hospital.
The Saanich Police Traffic Safety Unit conducted a lengthy and comprehensive investigation. These are evidence based investigations. Our officers spoke with a number of people throughout the course of the investigation including the driver, witnesses, emergency services personnel, and hospital staff. The Saanich Police Crash Analyst Team collected evidence from both the scene and from the vehicle. Investigators also obtained medical documents in relation to the driver.
All evidence led the investigators to believe the driver suffered a medical event while driving. During this event the driver lost control of her vehicle, mounted the sidewalk and struck Mr. Rana. As the driver suffered a medical issue she will not be charged with any infractions under the Motor Vehicle Act or Criminal Code. Investigators did complete a request for review of medical fitness to drive and submitted this to the Office of the Superintendent of Motor Vehicles.
Again, our thoughts and condolences go out to the Rana family.
