Several witnesses assisted Saanich Police last night after they witnessed a driver speeding, crash, and then attempt to leave the scene.
Shortly before 10:20 p.m. last night a motorist driving near Mayfair Mall in Victoria saw a white Toyota sedan pass them at a high rate of speed. As they continued and approached the Saanich Fire/Police Department, they saw the same vehicle again, but now it was sideways across the highway, had sustained damage, and all of the airbags had been deployed.
The vehicle in question then started to drive away, however additional witnesses called police and continued to follow the vehicle until it stopped a short distance away on the off-ramp at McKenzie Ave.
Saanich Police officers arrived on scene and located the driver who cooperated with investigators. While the exact series of events leading up to the collision are still being investigated, police believe alcohol was a factor in this single-vehicle incident.
“We would like to thank the actions of all the witnesses involved, “said Cst. Markus Anastasiades. “They clearly believed the driver’s actions posed a serious risk to the public, and they took the appropriate steps by calling the police and then remained on scene to speak to investigators.”
