On Friday, April 9th, 2021 Just before 4:30 pm, emergency responders, including police, fire and ambulance responded to a call of a vehicle incident at Uptown Shopping Plaza. Once on scene, it was discovered that a vehicle on a parkade level had driven through the concrete wall and into the interior of Wal-Mart. As a result, several people inside Wal-Mart were trapped.
Saanich Fire crews were able to rescue the people trapped inside, and the driver was also safely removed from their vehicle. All sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
We can confirm that the driver was a man in his early 20’s who we believe was experiencing a mental health crisis leading up to and at the time of the collision. The incident remains under investigation.
“The driver was taken to the hospital to receive medical care and treatment. It’s remarkable that physical injuries to all involved were non-life-threatening.”
