On February 4, 2021, at 7:35 a.m. officers responded to a two-vehicle collision in the 5200 block of West Saanich Road. One of the drivers involved, a 31-year-old man, was pronounced dead at the scene.
An investigation into the cause of the collision was launched by the Saanich Police Department’s Crash Analyst Team in conjunction with our Major Crime Unit, which handles any collision that results in a fatality.
The results of the investigation have revealed that the deceased’s vehicle crossed the centre line and collided head-on with an oncoming vehicle. The driver of the other vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The reason as to why the vehicle crossed the centre line remains unknown. Speed or impairment were not factors in this collision, nor was the use of any handheld electronic device. The vehicle was also in good working condition and an inspection found no mechanical issues or failures that would have explained why the vehicle crossed the centre line.
“We want to extend our gratitude to the family and loved ones of the deceased, as well as to the other driver and their family for their patience and cooperation in this investigation. This was a tragic collision that took time to investigate and we hope this conclusion brings some closure to all of those involved.”
