On Tuesday, June 1, 2021, at approximately 3:50 p.m. Saanich Police responded to a call that a pedestrian had been struck by a passing commercial truck at the northeast corner of Douglas Street and Saanich Road near Uptown Shopping Centre. The pedestrian was deceased upon police arrival. Due to the location of the incident, traffic in the area was significantly affected while officers secured the scene.
Investigators determined that a physical altercation occurred between two pedestrians which lead to the death of a 34-year-old male. A male was arrested on scene and taken into police custody as the investigation continues.
The driver of the truck is not the subject of the investigation and is cooperating.
The Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) is now investigating this incident and is appealing to the public for any witnesses to come forward that they have not already spoken to.
If you were in the area of Douglas St and Saanich Road during the time of 3:30 – 4:00 pm yesterday with dashcam footage, please contact investigators.
Investigators are not looking for further suspects and there is no risk to the public.
