Saanich Police investigators are still seeking the public’s assistance in locating missing 70-year-old Jean-Michel Cabanes, who was last seen in Saanich on October 14, 2021. The motorhome he had rented was located on October 29, 2021 in the parking lot of the China Beach Juan de Fuca Provincial Park Day Use area, commonly known as the start point for the Mystic Beach trail. It is believed that Mr. Cabanes arrived at that lot on either October 20 or October 21. Efforts by local Search and Rescue crews have not be able to locate him.
Investigators are hoping to anyone that would have accessed that parking lot between October 20-29 and either saw the motorhome as pictured or Mr. Cabanes himself. He is described as a Caucasian man, 6’2” tall, 240 lbs, with gray hair, and speaks fluent English with a French accent. He also hikes with telescoping poles.
Mr. Cabanes arrived from Montreal, QC and picked up a Class C motorhome in Saanich which he had pre-arranged as a rental to return by October 26. He planned to spend some days on the island and possibly at campgrounds, however, specific locations are not known. He did not return the motorhome October 26, and he also never boarded his scheduled flight home to Montreal on October 28.
His family is very concerned for his well-being and it is completely out of character for him not to be in regular contact with them.
The motorhome as pictured, a 2016 Mercedes-Benz Class C RV with BC licence plate PE384F.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Saanich Police Department at 250-475-4321.
