The Saanich Police Department noted an increase in shoplifting incidents across the district. In response, officers conducted Operation Hidden Costs throughout February, an enforcement initiative involving both covert and uniform operations at four major retail locations in Saanich.
The operation led to the recovery of more than $1,000 in stolen property belonging to local businesses, including a large volume of consumable goods and other retail items. Thirteen individuals were arrested, resulting in six criminal charges.
“Shoplifting causes real harm to businesses, whether they are large retailers or small, locally owned shops,” said Inspector Andy Stuart, Officer in Charge of Patrol. “Our department recognizes that impact and remains focused on addressing it.”
Operation Hidden Costs was funded through a C-STEP grant provided by the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General.
As part of the same C-STEP grant funding, the Saanich Police Department is hosting a series of information sessions for business operators focused on shoplifting. The first session has already taken place and was well attended. A second session is scheduled for March 26.
