On September 27th, 2013, Staff Sergeant Douglas Newman was honoured with a Diversity Award by the Affiliation of Multicultural Societies and Services Agencies (AMSSA) of BC.
Staff Sergeant Newman volunteered with the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria (ICA) who nominated him for the award.
Steven Baileys from ICA provided the following quote:
“The individual AMSSA Service Recognition Volunteer Award went to Staff Sergeant Douglas Newman of Saanich Police. Staff Sergeant Newman is a long time ICA volunteer and has taken a leadership role in promoting diversity awareness within the Saanich Police, the Greater Victoria Police Diversity Advisory Committee and the diverse ethnocultural communities. Some of his many volunteer roles included being a participant in ICA’s Pen Pals Program and the Human Library Project, serving as Co-Chair of Greater Victoria Police Diversity Advisory Committee, member of Community Partnership Network advisory team, and police liaison at Interfaith Bridging events. Doug Newman has shown he is a true diversity champion committed to building relationships and increasing understanding between police and community.”
