Saanich Police are reminding pedestrians and drivers to be alert and to take precautions to prevent injuries following an early evening incident left a pedestrian with serious, but non-life threatening injuries on Monday night.
Shortly after 7 p.m., Saanich Police received a report of a pedestrian that had been struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Marigold and Interurban Road.
Investigators determined that a 56 year old female was walking her dog and crossing the street at the intersection. A car, being driven by a 31 year old male, made a left turn and struck the pedestrian, knocking the woman to the ground and causing a serious injury to her lower leg. The dog was not harmed.
Paramedics attended the scene and transported the female to hospital where she received treatment for her injuries and was later released to recover at home.
The male driver was issued a violation ticket for failing to yeild to a pedestrian, under Section 127 of the Motor Vehicle Act, which carries a $167 fine. The male remained at the scene and was cooperative with investigators.
“It would appear that lighting conditions and the fact that the pedestrian was wearing dark clothing may have been factors in this collision” Sgt. Steve Eassie said.
Motorists and other road users are reminded that it is often difficult to see vulnerable road users at this time of year, especially during inclement weather and dark conditions.
Pedestrians and cyclists are reminded to wear bright coloured or reflective clothing, and to carry some kind of light to warn other road users of their presence.
