Yesterday, Saanich Police Traffic Safety Unit officers conducting enforcement on Willis Point road, clocked a motorcycle travelling at 137km in a 60km zone.
It seems as the weather changes speeds pick up on Willis Point road and Wallace drive. This past Saturday and Sunday, enforcement was conducted in the area. Five vehicles were impounded for excessive speeding, two of which who were travelling more than 60km over the limit. One of the vehicles impounded was a local cab that was on duty without passengers.
The motorcycle travelling at 137km saw the officers and took off at an even greater speed. The rider was last seen passing several vehicles in a dangerous manner as it sped down Wallace drive. Officers chose not to try and stop the motorcycle for the safety of the rider and the public.
Last year a significant amount of enforcement was done in the same area. A total of 49 tickets were issued for various infractions. Ten of those were excessive speeding charges. Last year, the fastest speed seen was 188km by a motorcycle, more than three times the speed limit.
The changes to the Motor Vehicle Act allowing for vehicle impoundment came into effect this year. For those drivers found speeding excessively their vehicles will be impounded for 7 days.
Continued enforcement is planned for the same area through the spring and summer months.
