Armed and barricaded

Over the dinnertime hour, officers responded to a residence in the 3800 block of Mildred street in Saanich. The investigation was regarding the possession of firearms by an occupant of the residence.

Initial responding Patrol officers contained the residence and made telephone contact with the occupants. Due to their uncooperative nature and potential risk to the public and officers, the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Team was called. For safety reasons, some evacuations of immediate neighbours occurred.

A search warrant was obtained for the residence by investigators with the assistance of members of the Regional Crime Unit. At approximately 7:30 pm, ERT negotiators succeeded in having the occupants exit the residence. The suspect was taken into custody without incident.

The suspect is a 21 year old Saanich resident well known to local agencies. Investigators remain on scene to conduct a search of the residence.

Assistance at the scene of this incident was also provided by BC Transit who provided a warm bus for witnesses and evacuees and the BC Ambulance Service who provided an ambulance on scene.
