Laundry room break-ins

There have been three separate laundry room attacks in Saanich in recent weeks. These events have all caused significant damage to the machines in the buildings.

March 16th- 3200 block Glasgow ave: overnight the laundry room was entered. The door to the room had been forced and the room entered. Coin operated dryers had been moved and looked like attempts were made to enter the machine’s coin mechanism.

March 19th- 3200 Quadra street: overnight the machines in two rooms on separate floors had been entered. Coin mechanisms had been pried giving access to the coin box. Approximate stolen coinage totalled $200-300. Damage to the machines is extensive.

March 23rd- 3200 block Cook street: the laundry room was entered overnight. Video surveillance was obtained of the suspect, which only provides a limited description. Suspect described as a Caucasian male, black baseball cap, black jacket and pants. The door had been pried and the machines entered.

Steps that can be taken to avoid:

• Review your building exterior security;

• Secure the laundry rooms so only residents can enter;

• Consider a card type access system as opposed to coin operated machines;

• Be mindful of who enters the building through the exterior doors and garages. It is believed that most of these thieves enter behind residents and guests that enter the building.
