It didn’t take long for Saanich Police to catch the man who stole a gift basket donated to a Tour de Rock Fundraiser.
Saanich Police previously reported that on Friday, August 24, 2012 a gift basket that had been intended as a fundraiser for Tour de Rock had been stolen while organizers had their backs turned.
The following morning at 10 am (August 25) Saanich Police responded to Hampton Park, adjacent to Tillicum Mall where the theft had occurred. Police had been called to the park for an unrelated matter. One of the attending officers had already viewed surveillance video from the recreation centre and recognized the man.
A number of hair products from the stolen gift basket were found in the man’s possession.
Follow-up investigation by police resulted in the recovery of more of the stolen items. All or nearly all of the basket contents have now been recovered.
The arrested man is well-known to police and he has an extensive criminal record stretching back twenty years.
He was released on conditions not to attend at the Pearkes Recreation Centre.
He will be making his first court appearance on October 10th. Police will be proposing charges for theft and possession of stolen property.
