Just after 9:30am Friday morning, a call was received from the 2800 block of Rockwell ave. The female caller had gone to use her vehicle and found an unknown male sleeping inside. Without waking him, she called the Saanich Police.
A short time later, two officers arrived and woke the sleeping thief. He was arrested from the vehicle and had what appeared to be stolen property in his possession. Two rolls of refrigerator copper tubing and some sunglasses were found in the 2001 Nissan that did not belong to the complainant.
When the male was arrested he was recognized by one of the officers as a past Regional Crime Unit target. This led to the officer contacting the RCU and as luck would have it, they had just obtained a warrant the same day for past thefts from autos which occurred in August. The male was arrested for the warrants and for the mischief to the vehicle in which he had been found sleeping.
The male was held for court and was remanded until Wednesday. Remanded was Brian Charles Steventon, 38 years of age with a long history of property related offences.
The property recovered at the time of the arrest has now been confirmed stolen from another area vehicle. Further charges are pending.
Of interest, the same male was found passed out inside a stolen vehicle in the 3800 block of Cadbory Bay road back in March 2009 for which he was convicted.
