Yesterday afternoon at 1:18pm, the Saanich Police were contacted by a male reporting a break-in in progress to his residence in the 2600 block of Foul Bay road. Multiple Saanich and Oak Bay Police officers responded to the area.
The caller’s attention had been drawn to noises outside and when he looked he saw the suspect breaking into a shed. The suspect then began to bang on the rear door to the residence trying to force entry with a hammer. The resident called out to the suspect who then fled with the hammer in his hand.
The first responding officer into the area was a Street Crime Unit officer in plainclothes who was conducting surveillance on a different investigation. At 1:22pm, the officer spotted the male suspect within 2 blocks of the victim’s residence. The officer followed the suspect and then saw him meet up with a second male and remove his pants in an attempt to alter his appearance.
An Oak Bay officer arrived at the scene along with a Saanich Traffic Safety Unit officer. Both males were taken into custody without further incident.
The hammer used by the suspect was recovered in Bowker Creek by a Street Crime Unit officer. Despite removing his pants and trying to hide them in a shopping buggy pushed by the second male, they were seized and inside was a paper with the suspect’s name.
Local male, 40yrs, of no fixed address who has an extensive record of property related offences dating back to the 1980’s. He was held overnight and will appear today in Victoria Provincial Court.
