Only report incidents that occurred in the District of Saanich. If the incident took place outside of Saanich, contact the police agency of jurisdiction.

When to use Online Reporting

Online reporting allows community members to submit reports for specific calls for service, if the purpose for the call for service meets the criteria. You may report online if you meet the following criteria:

It is not an emergency. The crime is not in progress; safety of any person is not at risk.
The incident occurred within the District of Saanich.
You have a valid email address and can receive communication via email.
You are reporting on behalf of yourself, or you are the representative of a business.
There are no known suspects.
There is no evidence that requires an officer to attend the scene.
The theft or loss does not involve a firearm, passport, immigration documents, citizenship documents or prescription drugs.

When NOT to use online reporting

Contact the Saanich Police non-emergency line at 250-475-4321 or 911 if immediate assistance if required for the following:

Domestic Incidents.
Break & Enters.
Motor Vehicle Collisions.
Stolen/Recovered Vehicles.
Fire/Arson.
Stolen Property with Suspect.
Violent Crime against Person.
Crimes in Progress.
Lost or stolen License Plates.

What Can I Report Online?

Assist General Public

Please complete an “Assist General Public” report if you are unsure of where your complaint may fit. This may include but is not limited to things such as:

Neighbour disputes.
Chronic tenting or encampment issues.
Hazards.

Sample Narrative

On (date) at approximately (time), my neighbour and I got into a heated exchange over our shared fence line, located at (address). The dispute with my neighbour has been on-going and is concerning the precise location of the fence line dividing our properties. The disagreement arises from differing interpretations of the boundary and the responsibilities associated with its maintenance. Despite my efforts to resolve the matter through direct discussion, no mutual understanding has been reached, and the issue remains unresolved. The uncertainty surrounding the boundary has created tension between us and has affected our ability to maintain a cooperative relationship. I’m filing a report because I have concerns that our relationship is deteriorating and the dispute will escalate into something more serious.

Sample Narrative 2

On (date) at approximately (time), I noticed several tents set up at (location). I reside at (location) and have noticed this to be an on-going issue. The individuals camping in the area do not comply with the Saanich Municipal Bylaws and the tents remain set up during the day. There are approximately three tents, and I’ve observed several occupants in the area.

Found Property

Found property may include, but is NOT limited to:

Government Identification.
Cell phone.

Backpack.

Sample Narrative

On (date) at approximately (time), I was at (location/address). While there, I found a (detailed description of property, include serial number if available). I did not see anyone in the area to whom it may belong. The (item) is currently at (location, i.e. in my possession, still at the location you found it ext.)

Sample Narrative 2

On (date) at approximately (time), I was walking through (location) in Saanich when I noticed a brown leather wallet lying under a table. The wallet appeared unattended, and no one nearby claimed it.

I picked up the wallet and briefly checked for identification to help locate the owner. Inside, I found a B.C. driver’s license, several bank cards, and a small amount of cash. The name on the ID was (insert name).

I immediately brought the wallet to (location) and filed a police report.

Fraud Under $10,000

Please use our online reporting portal only if the fraud took place in the district of Saanich. If you wish to report an internet-based fraud, such as cryptocurrency or phishing fraud, please contact our non-emergency line at 250-475-4321.

Sample Narrative

On (date) at approximately (time), I noticed several unauthorized transactions on my credit card. These charges were made to various retailers and services in Saanich that I did not use or authorize. I first became aware of the issue when (circumstance that alerted you, i.e. notification from bank, checked your online banking ext.)

I contacted my bank immediately. The card has since been cancelled and a fraud investigation has been initiated by the bank. I have not shared my card details with anyone and do not know how the information was obtained.

The list of fraudulent charges include:

Sample Narrative 2

On (date) at approximately (time), my wallet was stolen from my backpack while it was left unattended. When I noticed that my wallet had been taken, I immediately contacted my banking institution (include institution information) and had my cards cancelled. The bank informed me that several charges were made after the time it was stolen that I did not authorize. The list of charges include:

List individual locations and charge amounts.

The total of the fraudulent charges amounted to (include total).

The bank has launched an investigation and has stated that a refund is likely.

Theft Under $10,000 (No Suspect)

Theft is defined as the unlawful taking of property without the owner’s consent. Attempted theft refers to any effort to steal property without successfully completing the act. Please specify whether you are reporting a theft of an attempted theft.

Theft under $10,000 may include but is NOT limited to:

Theft from a vehicle.
Theft of mail.
Theft from construction site.

Please note the following items are NOT reportable online:

Passports.
Firearms.
Citizenship Cards.
Immigration paperwork.
Vehicles.
Anything valued over $10,000.

Sample Narrative

On (date) at approximately (time), I discovered that (item) been stolen from (location). I had left the (item) unattended between (time). Upon returning, I noticed that the (item) had been stolen.

The stolen item(s) include:

List item(s) including detailed description and serial number if available.

The estimated total value of the stolen property is approximately (value). I did not see or hear anything suspicious during the time of the incident. I do not have any surveillance cameras on the property, and no witnesses have come forward.

Hit and Run (Unoccupied vehicle/No suspect)

In case of a hit and run with no suspects, visit Report a claim to find out whether you meet the eligibility criteria of online reporting with ICBC. In case of motor vehicle collisions, or damage over approximately $10,000, please contact the Saanich Police non-emergency at 250-475-4321 or 911 if immediate assistance is required.

Sample Narrative

On (date) at approximately (time), I discovered damage to my parked vehicle, a (your vehicle), which was located on the street at (address) when the damage occurred. The vehicle had been parked for (length of time) and was last seen undamaged at around (time and date).

Upon inspection, I noticed damage to the (area of vehicle). There were no notes left on the windshield, and no witnesses have come forward. I do not have any surveillance footage or dashcam recordings of the incident.

No injuries occurred, and I was not inside the vehicle at the time. I do not have any suspects.

Shoplifting

Sample Narrative

On (date) at approximately (time), I was working at (location, including address) when a (describe suspect) entered the store. I saw the suspect place (describe items) in their pocket and exit the store without paying. The value of each item is as follows:

Mischief or Damage to Property Under $5,000

Under Section 430 of the Criminal Code of Canada, a person commits mischief when they intentionally:

Destroy or damage property.
Render property dangerous, useless, inoperative, or ineffective.
Obstruct, interrupt, or interfere with the lawful use or enjoyment of property.
Interfere with a person’s lawful use or enjoyment of property.

When the value of the affected property is less than $5,000, the offence is categorized as mischief under $5,000.

This includes but is NOT limited to:

Graffiti.
Damage to a vehicle, business or residence (broken window, keying a car).
Damaged to personal items.
Other general vandalism.

Sample Narrative 1

On (date) at approximately (time), I arrived at my business, located at (location) and discovered that the front window had been vandalized. The glass was cracked in multiple places, and there appeared to be markings made with permanent marker across the lower portion of the window.

The damage likely occurred overnight, as the window was intact when I closed the store at (time) the previous evening. I reviewed security footage and observed an individual loitering near the storefront around (time). The person appeared to strike the window with an object and then quickly left the area.

The estimated cost to repair the damage is approximately $600.

Sample Narrative 2

On (date) at approximately (time), I discovered that the garage door of my residence located at (address) had been vandalized with graffiti. The markings appeared to have been made with black spray paint and included illegible symbols and letters across the lower half of the door.

The garage was clean and undamaged when I last saw it the previous evening. I did not hear or see anything unusual overnight. There is no video surveillance footage of the event.

The estimated cost to remove the graffiti and repaint the door is approximately $300.

Lost Property Under $10,000

Saanich Police will only accept lost property reports where the item has a serial number, engraving or identifiable markings. If your lost item contains bank cards, please ensure that you contact your financial institution immediately and lock the cards.

Please note, lost property reports are not actively investigated but are kept for records purposes in the event the item is found and can be returned to the rightful owner. Lost property is defined as items that are missing or misplaced, not due to theft. If you believe an item has been stolen, please use the “Stolen Property” tab.

What you CAN report online:

Items valued under $10,000.
Lost drivers’ licences, health cards, SIN cards, etc. (List card value as $1.00 each).
Items with serial numbers, engraving or identifiable markings.

What you CANNOT report online:

Lost property valued over $10,000.
Lost firearms.
Lost passport photos, keys, money, clothing, eyeglasses etc.
Lost Canadian Passports: Report to Service Canada in person or phone 1-800-567-6868.
Lost Foreign Passports: Please report to Saanich Police non-emergency prior to contacting the Consulate or Embassy of the issuing country.
Lost credit cards, bank cards, membership cards, rewards cards, etc. (report to financial or issuing institution).

Sample Narrative

On (date) at approximately (time), I realized that I had lost my (detailed description of item, including serial number and/or identifiable markings) while at (location). I last used the (item) around (date and time). I retraced my steps around the area but was unable to locate (the item).

Traffic Incident/Driving Complaint

Traffic incidents reportable online may include but are NOT limited to:

Tailgating.
Distracted Driving.
Aggressive Driving.
Seatbelt Offences.
Traffic Light Infractions.
Chronic Traffic Problems in a Specific Area.

If you are filing a complaint about a specific vehicle/driver, please be sure to include a license plate.

Sample Narrative 1

On (date) at approximately (time), I was driving near (location), when I observed a (vehicle description, including license plate) driving erratically. The vehicle was weaving between lanes without signalling and abruptly braking, causing nearby drivers to swerve to avoid a collision.

At one point, the (vehicle) accelerated aggressively through a yellow light, nearly striking a pedestrian who was already crossing at the marked crosswalk. The driver appeared to be distracted, possibly using a mobile device, and showed no regard for traffic laws or public safety.

Sample Narrative 2

Over the past several weeks, I have observed a recurring traffic issue on (location or neighbourhood). Vehicles frequently exceed the posted speed limit of 30 km/h, especially during the early morning (7:00–9:00 AM) and late afternoon (4:00–6:00 PM) hours.

This area is a residential zone with many families and children who walk or bike to school. Despite the presence of speed limit signs and a nearby playground, drivers often ignore the rules, creating a hazardous environment for pedestrians and cyclists.
