MAN ARRESTED AFTER MULTIPLE INCIDENTS ON ROADS IN SAANICH AND VICTORIA

On October 2, 2022, at 12: 40 PM, it was reported to ECOMM that a male driving a Chevrolet Aveo erratically in the 2500 Block of Blanshard Street in the City of Victoria.  Shortly after, an additional caller stated that the erratic driver had exited his vehicle and brandished a knife toward another driver in the 2600 block of Blanshard Street.  A short while later, another caller advised they had been confronted by a male with a knife in the 3200 block of Blanshard Street in the roadway.  The erratic driving continued with the driver of the Cheverolet Aveo failing to stop at red lights, passing unsafely, and speeding.

Ultimately, another witness called in to advise the male driver was in the parking of the Save on Foods grocery store in the Saanich Plaza. With the assistance of the Victoria Police, Saanich Police attended and were able to de-escalate the male who was also in crisis and had what was believed to be a self-inflicted wound to his body.  The male, a 36-year-old Greater Victoria resident, was apprehended under the Mental Health Act and provided medical and mental health-related care.

After the male was assessed by medical professionals, he was arrested for Assault with a weapon x 2, Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose, and Uttering Threats. Police also learned that the male was on parole and had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.  Police communicated with his parole officer to ensure they were aware of the male’s actions.

The male was held in custody to face the criminal charges as police continue to investigate and gather evidence to support the case.  Saanich Police offered all victims and witnesses with supportive resources relative to the incident.

“This multijurisdictional incident could not have been remedied so quickly had it not been for the excellent awareness and communication of the witnesses involved.  It was fortunate that no other drivers, pedestrians, or cyclists were injured given the overall erratic driving and behaviour of the driver,” stated D/Sgt. Damian Kowalewich.
